The School of Life Sciences and Technology was established on December 25, 2003. Adhering to the educational philosophy of “striving for excellence rather than size, pursuing distinction rather than breadth,” the school has achieved remarkable accomplishments in discipline development, teaching, research, and talent cultivation through the collective efforts of faculty and students. These achievements provide robust support for the “Double First-Class” initiative.

The School has established a comprehensive talent cultivation system encompassing bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Undergraduate programs include four majors: - Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Engineering (National First-Class Undergraduate Programs) - Biomedical Engineering (Beijing Municipal First-Class Undergraduate Program) - Bioengineering + Big Data Management and Application (Dual Bachelor's Degree Program) Graduate education encompasses four academic master's programs, one professional master's program, two first-level doctoral programs, and two professional doctoral degree programs. Chemical Engineering and Technology is recognized as a national first-class discipline, while Biological Engineering ranks among the top disciplines in the Ministry of Education's fifth-round discipline evaluation.

The college houses the National Key Laboratory of Green Biomanufacturing, the National Energy Bio-refining R&D Center, the Ministry of Education Bio-refining Engineering Research Center, the Beijing Key Laboratory of Green Chemicals Biomanufacturing, the Beijing Advanced Center for Soft Matter Science - Synthetic Biology Branch, the Beijing University of Chemical Technology Bohai Rim Bioindustry Research Institute, and the Beijing University of Chemical Technology-China-Japan Friendship Hospital Biomedical Translation Research Center.

The School employs over 100 faculty and staff, including members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Changjiang Scholars Distinguished Professors, recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and the National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars, 973 Program Chief Scientists, He Liang He Li Prize laureates, Ministry of Education New Century Talents, Beijing Science and Technology Rising Stars, National Teaching Masters, and Beijing Teaching Masters. Additionally, several internationally renowned professors serve as permanent adjunct professors at the School.

The School remains committed to serving the primary frontlines of national economic development, demonstrating strong research capabilities and distinctive strengths in green biomanufacturing, biological resources and environmental engineering, synthetic biology, biomedicine, and biosafety. Over the past five years, the School has undertaken nearly 200 national and provincial/ministerial-level research projects, including the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation, securing nearly 400 million yuan in research funding. It has published over 1,200 high-impact research papers, including 4 in Nature, 3 in Cell, 1 in Science, and 1 in The Lancet. The School has obtained nearly 200 authorized patents, generating billions of yuan in economic benefits through technology transfer. The School has been honored with two National Second Prizes for Technological Invention, one National Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress, 16 provincial/ministerial-level awards, and over 10 provincial/ministerial-level or higher appraisals of scientific achievements. Its per-capita research funding ranks among the top nationwide in comparable academic departments.

The School prioritizes educational quality and innovates talent development models to foster well-rounded student growth. Students have consistently achieved outstanding results in international competitions like iGEM and national contests such as the “Challenge Cup.” In recent years, the School has maintained top-tier rates for overseas study, postgraduate enrollment, and employment within the university.
